Climbing Powell Hill - circa 1950

Photo of the Month - August 2015

Photo from the Alex Campbell Collection.

Two northbound C&O H-8 2-6-6-6, Allegheny class, locomotives are hard at work on Powell Hill most likely north of Linworth. Two H-8 locomotives on a heavy coal train were a little unusual. A more typical combination, in the last years of C&O steam out of Columbus, was an H-8 road locomotive with a T-1, 2-10-4 as a helper.

These two H-8 locomotives together generated 220,000 lbs. traction effort. They were a combined 250 feet in length and with a full tender together weighed 1,150 tons. It’s not likely Powell Hill is going to win the battle this time.
